Konrad Tyma

I lead engineering teams and build the backend platforms a business sells on. That means as much time with customers and product owners working out what is actually worth building as it does in the architecture — most recently the integration platform at Benifex, and payments at Revolut before that.

About

Lead Software Engineer

I am a lead engineer who starts from the business problem. The most useful thing I bring to a team is usually not the code — it is a willingness to stay in the ambiguous part at the beginning, with customers and product owners, until what is actually worth building becomes clear. Most of the expensive mistakes I have seen were decided long before anyone opened an editor.

I work best where the shape is not settled yet: a platform that does not exist, a market that has not been entered, a system that has to keep serving paying customers while it changes underneath them. I take that from requirement gathering and architecture through implementation, deployment and production support. Owning the whole path is what keeps the early decisions honest, because you are the one who answers for them later.

With product owners I try to be the engineer who argues about trade-offs rather than estimates: what a commitment really costs, what can ship in stages, which constraint is real and which is a preference. With teams I lead by making work legible — onboarding, mentoring, prioritising a backlog people actually believe in, and holding the standards that stop a codebase drifting. Most of what makes a team fast is not technical.

The engineering underneath is Java and distributed systems. I care about event-driven design and domain modelling for a commercial reason rather than an aesthetic one: they are what let a system keep changing once it has customers on it.

Proof

Where that has actually been true

  • Benifex

Led requirement gathering directly with external customers from day one of the integration platform, and turned conflicting one-off requests into a single thing worth building.

  • Benifex

Designed the platform so onboarding the next customer integration is configuration and a thin adapter — making integration expansion a commercial lever rather than an engineering cost.

  • Benifex

Define the technical roadmap with product stakeholders and lead the engineering team delivering it, owning the solution from architecture through to production.

  • Revolut

Owned the BLIK integration for Polish users end to end, design through production launch, adding the payment method Polish customers expect by default.

  • Revolut

Helped scale alternative payment methods across the Netherlands, Poland and Spain in the Core Payments team, supporting entry into each market.

How I work

Where the engineering meets the business

  • Product partnership

I work with product owners on trade-offs rather than tickets: what a commitment really costs, what can ship in stages, and which constraints are negotiable. Roadmaps hold up better when they are built with the delivery risk already priced in.

  • Customer-facing discovery

I lead calls with external customers and run requirement gathering directly, rather than receiving a spec second-hand. It is the cheapest point at which to find out that two customers asking for the same thing mean different things by it.

  • Team leadership

I have led delivery teams of up to seven engineers — onboarding, mentoring, backlog prioritisation and the engineering standards that stop a codebase drifting. Most of what makes a team fast is not technical.

  • End-to-end ownership

Architecture through implementation, deployment and production support. Owning the whole path is what keeps design decisions honest, because you are the one who answers for them at three in the morning.

Where I have worked and what actually shipped

BenifexAug 2024 — Present

Lead Software Engineer

Southampton, UK — remote

Lead the technical team behind a platform for outbound third-party integrations and an inbound gateway serving internal products across the business. The work runs from customer conversations through architecture to production.

  • Joined on day one and led requirement gathering directly with external customers — running the calls that turned specific, conflicting integration requests into something worth building once.
  • Defined the technical roadmap with product stakeholders, pricing delivery risk into commitments rather than discovering it afterwards.
  • Designed the platform to be modular and extensible so onboarding the next customer integration is configuration and a thin adapter — turning integration expansion into a commercial lever instead of an engineering cost.
  • Lead the engineering team day to day and own the solution end to end, from architecture through to production.

  • Spring Boot
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • Event-driven architecture
RevolutJul 2023 — Aug 2024

Senior Software Engineer

London, UK — remote

Backend engineer in the Core Payments team, enabling and scaling Alternative Payment Methods across European markets including the Netherlands, Poland and Spain — market entry as much as engineering, since customers reach for the payment method they already trust.

  • Took end-to-end ownership of the BLIK integration for Polish users, from design through to production launch, delivering the payment experience inside the Revolut app.
  • Contributed to the rollout and maintenance of the iDEAL and Bizum integrations, supporting Revolut’s position in the Dutch and Spanish markets.

  • Payments
  • Distributed systems
SpyrosoftSep 2019 — Jul 2023

Senior Java Software Engineer

Wrocław, Poland

Backend engineering and solution architecture across a series of client products — UK benefits platforms, industrial IoT, healthcare and energy trading. Most engagements started at requirements gathering with the client rather than a finished specification.

  • Worked directly with clients and cross-functional stakeholders to define solutions, then carried them through to delivery.
  • Acted as solution architect on a large-scale digital transformation, introducing new product capabilities on top of a legacy platform mid-modernisation.

Selected projects

  • Benifex Home Platform

Backend engineer in a UK-based product Scrum team, working alongside external product owners to take the platform from early proof of concept to production adoption by multiple customers. Led backend feature architecture, onboarded and mentored new engineers, and managed and prioritised the technical backlog. Contributed to engineering standards within the Backend Chapter.

Java Software Developer → Senior Java Software Engineer

Large-scale enterprise cafeteria system for managing employee benefits, serving HR administrators and employees on a paid-access platform. Delivered inside Scrum teams working closely with external product owners and clients.

  • Progressed from junior to regular developer and then to team leader, leading a seven-person engineering team.
  • Worked directly with external product owners and clients on prioritisation and delivery, and improved how the engineering teams collaborated with them.
  • Drove the migration from a Spring/Hibernate monolith toward distributed services aligned with Domain-Driven Design, using containerised infrastructure and event-driven patterns — while the platform kept shipping product to paying customers.
